Pastor George E. Laypoole, Jr.

Pastor George E. Laypoole, Jr. 91, of Marion, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at 5:58 pm on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Marion Health in Marion. He was born in Manchester, Ohio, on Friday, September 8, 1933, to George and Nellie (Gifford) Laypoole, Sr.. On September 23, 1955, he married Juanita Hurd, who preceded him in death. George was born on a riverboat on the Ohio River and graduated from Marion High School in 1952. He entered the United States Army, serving in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. During his service, he was awarded the German Occupation Medal, National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Expert Marksman's Medal while stationed in Munich. His faith guided him throughout his life. George was an active deacon in the Christian Bible Church and served as pastor there for several years before becoming the Senior Pastor of Water Street Church in Jonesboro, a role he held for over 15 years. He embraced every role within the church, serving as a bus driver, Sunday School teacher, and Treasurer/Trustee, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his congregation. An avid fisherman and hunter, George especially cherished the arrival of spring when he could go mushroom hunting. He was a skilled swimmer and found joy in the water from an early age. George is survived by his daughters, Vickie J. (Gordon) Seacott of Marion, and Tonya L. (Bryan) Seacott of Marion; his son, Brian K. (Joannie) Laypoole of Marion; grandchildren, Stephanie (Scott) McHenry of FL, Shane (Gina Seacott) of TX, Heather (Anthony) Columbus of Marion, Ben Alumbaugh of Marion, Gordon Seacott, Jr. of Marion, Kyle (Gloria) Alumbaugh of Westport, IN, Mark McCracken of Indianapolis, Tiffany (Boe) Dailey of Columbus, OH, Kimberly (Duane) Spooner of Anderson, Bonnie (Clinton) Russell of Brownsburg, Nicholas (Amanda) Seacott of Marion, Katelyn (Tyler) Laypoole of Marion, and Kirsten Laypoole of Marion; 19 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Nellie Laypoole; wife, Juanita Laypoole; sister, Mary Francis; son, Troy L. Laypoole; and brothers, Luther S. Laypoole, Larry H. Laypoole, and Wayne Ashmore. The family will receive visitors from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, as well as 1-hour prior to the service on Thursday beginning at 12 noon at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN. A funeral service to celebrate George's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service. His best friend and Pastor Wally Champion will be officiating, with burial following at Grant Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be directed to Water Street Church, 605 W.
