Paradise Spring to celebrate 200 years with multiple events

WABASH, IN- On October 23, 1826, a Treaty was signed at Paradise Spring between the Miami Nation and the US Government that allowed for a canal to be built through northern Indiana that would open this part of the state for settlement and lead to the beginning of the future City of Wabash. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of this Treaty, the Paradise Spring Board, Inc. is planning several events.

First, all county high school seniors are encouraged to ask your school guidance counselor for the guidelines and application for the Paradise Spring Board Scholarship. All students are required to write an essay about the Treaty – the winner receives a $2500 Scholarship for college but deadline is March 31st so do not delay.

Second, the Paradise Spring Board, Inc. will host the Annual Soup (& MORE!) Supper Wed. Feb. 25th at 6:00pm at the Wabash County Museum. Alec Guenin, Archivist and Wabash County Historian at the Museum will share about Early Education in Wabash and Lorynn Hunt will provide music for our entertainment. Both Alec and Lorynn are members of the Board and are eager to participate in telling the story of Paradise Spring and Wabash. This is a free event with a wonderful meal provided and all are welcome but kindly RSVP to Deanna at (260)571-2879.

As in previous years, they will host area elementary school field trips during the month of May.

The Main Event this year will be the Treaty Festival on Oct. 23 & 24th to commemorate the 200th anniversary when the Treaty was signed in 1826. Many Living History people will join in at Paradise Spring to recreate an educational and entertaining atmosphere as the community celebrates the beginning of the City of Wabash. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of celebrating local history. If you are descendants of the Miami Nation and want to participate, they urge you to contact them. And they are always looking for people to join the Paradise Spring Board or help with a particular event. Watch for more details to come.
