GRANT COUNTY, IN- On Saturday, February 7, 2026, deputies with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop near 20th Street and Selby Street in Marion after observing traffic violations. The driver failed to comply and fled, leading to a vehicle pursuit through Marion and parts of Grant County. Assisting agencies included the Marion Police Department, Sweetser Police Department, and the Indiana State Police.
During the pursuit, officers deployed multiple tire deflation devices in an effort to safely stop the vehicle. The suspect struck several sets of stop sticks but continued fleeing before the vehicle became disabled on State Road 18 near Laura Lane in Sweetser. The driver exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident.
The driver, Shawn Cox, age 50, was transported to Marion Health for medical clearance and then lodged at the Grant County Jail. He faces multiple charges including criminal recklessness, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, operating while intoxicated endangering a person, habitual traffic violator, reckless driving, and additional traffic-related violations stemming from the pursuit.
According to Marion Police Department reports, Cox was previously involved in a vehicle pursuit in November 2022 that ended in a crash at 10th Street and Baldwin Avenue. Court records show he had a change of plea hearing related to that case on January 28, 2026.
No officers or members of the public were injured during the February 7 incident.
