James E. Cotrel

James E. Cotrel, 84, of Upland, passed away at 3:20 am on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Brickyard Healthcare in Muncie. He was born in Lebanon, Missouri, on January 14, 1941, to Herbert and Rachel (Coursey) Cotrel. On February 24, 1979, he married Shirley K. Enyeart. James was a firefighter for 22 years with the Marion Fire Department, where he was known for his dedication and camaraderie. He was an avid hunter, enjoying the pursuit of caribou, deer, elk, and other game. He took pride in processing the animals he hunted and often helped other hunters with their game. James loved the outdoors, fishing, and cooking for his fellow firefighters at the station.  James will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his dedication to his work, and his generous spirit. Survivors include his son, Jerry (Melony) Cotrel of Upland; granddaughters, Heather (Andy) McElhaney of Warren and Holly Highley of Marion; grandson, Adam Cotrel of Upland; great-grandsons, Wyatt McElhaney, Levi McElhaney, Eli Highley, and Pierce Highley; great-granddaughters, Willa Highley, Karlyn Cotrel, and Kortney Cotrel; brother, William H. (Vicky) Cotrel of Missouri; and sisters, Mary Koehler of Missouri, Betty (Dale) Koehler of Missouri, Edie (Roy) McCann of Missouri, and Nancy (Doug) Hillme of Missouri. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley K. Cotrel; father, Herbert P. Cotrel; mother, Rachel Cotrel; and brother-in-law, Ralph Koehler. The family will receive visitors from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN. Immediately following the time of visitation, funeral service to celebrate James’ life will begin at 12:00 noon.  Pastor Mick Simpkins will be officiating with burial taking place at Gardens of Memory in Marion.
