Rebecca “Becky” Shear, 83, passed away peacefully at home on September 7, 2026 surrounded by her family.
Becky was born to Paul and Hilda (Summerland) Camp on November 12, 1942. She was a 1960 graduate of Lagro High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Edward Shear, on March 16, 1962. They shared 51 years of marriage before his passing on November 10, 2013.
Becky worked as a school cook for more than 40 years, serving at Lagro, Sharp Creek, and Northfield schools. She enjoyed her work and the many students and families she came to know over the years.
She loved the Wabash County 4-H Fair and especially enjoyed helping her children and grandchildren with their projects. Becky often said, “It is un-American not to be in 4-H.” She loved sewing and crafts and taught all of her granddaughters to sew, spending many hours helping with their 4-H projects and outfits. Becky also enjoyed making porcelain dolls and sewing the clothes to dress them in, eventually accumulating a large collection of porcelain dolls.
For many years, Becky was a church organist, playing for church services, weddings, funerals, and special events. She also served as a Sunday school teacher and youth leader at the church.
Family was a big part of Becky’s life. For many years, she hosted Sunday dinners where her family and friends gathered for food and time together. Everyone loved going to Grandma’s house. She also enjoyed family campouts at the pond and Labor Day weekends at Epworth Forest.
Although Becky was not athletic herself, she was a devoted fan. She attended hundreds of basketball, volleyball, baseball, wrestling, track, football, tennis, cross country, soccer, and softball games to support her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She was also known for giving good advice and encouragement. She was “Grandma Beck” to the whole community. Becky believed that if you set your mind to something, you could accomplish it, and she was quick to remind others of that.
In recent years, Becky worked part-time at Hopewell Barn, greeting and assisting guests during wedding weekends. She enjoyed meeting people and had a natural ability to make them feel comfortable. She truly never knew a stranger.
She was very involved in the Lagro Community, serving as Den Mother of Todd’s Cub Scout troup, and also was named the 2025 Grand Marshal of the Lagro Good Ole Days Parade.
Becky is survived by her children, Deb (Steve) Conner, Todd (Angel) Shear, and Tammy (Randy) Keaffaber. Her grandchildren are Luke (Jessica) Abraham, Alexandra (Greg) Degitz, Bailey (Brad) Colbert, Ryan (Michelle) Keaffaber, Noah (Madison) Shear, Abby (Joseph) Mitchell, India Shear and Allyson (Jackson) Beery. Her great-grandchildren are Logan Abraham, Kerrigan Abraham, Jovi Abraham, Christian Lo, Evie Lo, Elison Degitz, Mackenzie Degitz, Korinne Degitz, Elowen Shear, Blake Keaffaber, Royce Keaffaber, Miles Mitchell, Sadie Mitchell, and two great grandsons on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Shear; her parents, Paul and Hilda (Summerland) Camp; her sisters, JoVan Copeland and Marie Rose; and her grandson, Chad Keaffaber.
Becky will be remembered for her years of service, her creativity, her fierce love of family, and the many memories she created with the people around her.
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
There will be a Celebration of Becky’s Life gathering 1-4 pm Sunday, September 20, 2026 at the Hopewell Barn, 2238 N. 500 E. Urbana, with a service at 4:00 pm.
