GRANT COUNTY, IN- This from WPTA.com: One person is dead, and two firefighters were hurt in a Grant County fire Friday.
According to the Marion Fire Department, first responders were dispatched to the 3600 block of South Prince Hall Drive around 12:45 p.m. on a report of a ‘structure fire with a possible trapped occupant’.
The department says Marion Health Hospital EMS, who was first to arrive, found smoke coming from an apartment building and made multiple rescue attempts that were unsuccessful due to heavy smoke and extreme heat.
Once firefighters arrived, the department says they were able to enter the apartment successfully and remove the trapped occupant from the building.
Despite life-saving efforts, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld, pending positive identification and notification of family members.
According to the department, two firefighters also sustained minor injuries. They have recieved medical evaluation and treatment, and are expected to be okay.
The fire remains under investigation, in coordination with the State of Indiana Fire Marshal’s Office.
