WABASH, IN- Thursday on the MiBash Morning Jam (WJOT), Wabash Mayor Scott Long gave an update on the overpass project. He told Your News Local:
“Trains will no longer blow their horns at every crossing in Wabash City. This decision follows years of complaints from residents about noise pollution. A key prerequisite for implementing the quiet zone is completing safety enhancements at crossings to meet regulatory standards.”
To ensure crossing safety (a requirement for the quiet zone), Norfolk and Southern Railway will take the following actions:
Install delineators on both sides of each crossing to improve visibility. Extend crossing gates to prevent individuals from cutting through when gates are lowered.
Two weeks ago, notification was received via email that funding for the safety project has been appropriated.
Norfolk and Southern is responsible for executing the safety measures (delineators and gate extensions).
Once the safety enhancements are completed, an application will be submitted to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to officially establish a quiet zone throughout Wabash City.
The process addresses resident noise complaints by first implementing critical safety upgrades (delineators and extended gates) funded through appropriated resources, then seeking FRA approval for the quiet zone. This ensures both noise reduction and public safety, directly improving quality of life for Wabash residents.
