Multi agency response coordinates safe removal of tree from ISP radio tower

PERU, IN — A coordinated response took place Thursday evening, March 26, 2026, and continued throughout the day Friday after a tree fell onto one set of guy wires supporting the Indiana State Police radio tower located on Mexico Road in Peru. The impact caused the tower to lean toward the west, prompting an immediate response to protect critical communications infrastructure and ensure public safety.

Numerous personnel from various state and local agencies responded to the scene to assess the situation and plan for the safe removal of the tree. Due to the tower’s condition and the surrounding terrain, specialized equipment and careful coordination were required to complete the operation safely.

Gray’s Tree Service was contacted and responded to remove the tree. Site conditions required the use of truck mats to allow heavy equipment safe access to the tower location without causing additional damage to the area. To support this effort, Peru Utilities and the Rural Electric Membership Corporation (REMC) were contacted and provided truck mats to facilitate equipment access for the tree service crew.

Thanks to the cooperation and professionalism of all agencies and partners involved, the tree was successfully removed while maintaining safety at the site and minimizing disruption to critical communications infrastructure.

Responding Emergency Agencies included Miami County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police-Peru District, Miami County Emergency Management Agency, Peru City Street Dept., Miami County Highway Department and the Integrated Public Safety Commission – Indiana.
