| IN- Indiana American Water shares tips on how to avoid costly repairs or being without water during the winter months. Follow these easy tips to winterize your pipes so your water flows smoothly all winter long. Before the cold sets in: Locate and test your main water shut-off valve. Drain outdoor hoses and irrigation systems. Eliminate drafts around pipes. When temperatures stay below freezing: Keep an eye on areas where pipes are most vulnerable, such as basements, garages, crawl spaces and exterior walls. Open cabinet or vanity doors slightly ajar to let warmer air circulate. Allow a small trickle of water to run to help maintain steady water flow. If pipes do freeze: Turn off your main water valve and warm the area around the pipe safely, never with an open flame or an unattended heater. Once pipes are thawed, slowly turn the water back on and check for any leaks. Visit Indiana American Water online and click on Report Emergency at the top of the page. |
