Converse Historical Society preserving local history with new exhibits, memorabilia and local art

CONVERSE, IN- The Converse Historical Society is turning the page—quite literally—on a new chapter of local preservation. Founded in 2015, the Society’s mission to celebrate and safeguard the stories of Converse is gaining momentum thanks to a new home, new exhibits, and a new endowment to secure its future.

In October 2023, the former Converse United Methodist Church was generously donated to the Society. The transformation from house of worship to house of history is well underway, with plans for a reference room filled with bound newspapers from the 1920s and 1930s and 96 feet of display space for rotating exhibits, school memorabilia, and local art.

Recent grants from the Miami County Community Foundation have helped the Society enhance its exhibits, including new reusable display fixtures that board president Steve Reiff calls “a godsend.” Volunteers like board member Crystie Kirby are cataloging the growing collection, while new exhibits are in development to honor local figures like artist Thadeus “Thad” Jay Miller and basketball standout Monte Towe.

The Society is also working with Indiana Landmarks to pursue a National Register of Historic Places designation for an entire district in Converse, beginning with the historic church building itself.

With support from the Converse Historical Society Endowment Fund, their mission will continue for generations to come.
