Nationwide telephone scam continues in local communities

WABASH COUNTY, IN- Chief Deputy J. Tyler Guenin, would like to warn the community a common, and reoccurring nationwide telephone scam that is again circulating throughout Indiana. Several community members have recently reported receiving calls and voicemail messages from an individual claiming to be a Lieutenant or Sergeant who then ask to discuss an urgent legal matter. On today's date (July 31, 2025) they have used the name "Lieutenant Brian Wilson".

In these types of scams, callers will pose as local law enforcement and contact victims accusing them of failing to appear in court or make claims that the victim has something pending in court. The caller goes on to state that a warrant for the victim's arrest will be issued unless a fine is paid. Payment is often requested in the form of a wire transfer, emergency cash withdraw, cryptocurrency, or gift cards; with the scammer asking the victim to provide the gift card numbers over the phone.

No member of the Wabash County Sheriff's Office will ever call to solicit funds or collect fines over the phone. Additionally, juror summonses are sent through the mail and any other communication, through other mediums, should be considered suspicious.

Also, be aware that scammers may "spoof", a process of deliberately falsifying the information transmitted to your caller ID display by utilizing phone numbers of law enforcement, or government agencies, in an effort to disguise their identity and appear legitimate. If you receive a call of this nature, immediately hang up with the caller and verify the claim by calling the Wabash County Sheriff's Office or Wabash County Central Dispatch directly. Never use a phone number provided to you from the caller to verify their credibility.
