Grant County death investigation

GRANT COUNTY, IN- On Sunday, August 11th, 2024, at approximately 10:16pm, a 911 call to the Grant County Central Dispatch reported a shooting incident in the 6000 East 900 South area (State Road 26). The 911 caller reported he had fired shots into a Semi Tractor Vehicle Hauler after the Semi driver pointed a weapon with a laser light at him, reference to a road rage incident that occurred just minutes before on Interstate 69 between the two individuals. The caller reported the Semi Tractor Trailer left the scene headed southbound through the cornfield.

Grant County Sheriff Deputies, along with Officers from the Fairmount and Upland Police Departments responded to assist with the call. While enroute, Deputies observed a fire off in the distance and located the origin of the fire being the Semi Tractor Trailer that has struck a silo on a property in the 5000 block of East 975 South, after travelling approximately two-thirds of a mile through three cornfields from the original scene on State Road 26.

Fairmount Fire Fighters arrived, and with the assistance from Gas City and Matthews Fire Departments the blaze was extinguished. Fire Fighters then discovered a deceased body inside the cab of the Semi.

this death investigation is ongoing with witness interviews conducted and the scene processed by Grant County Coroner Stephen Dorsey, Crime Scene Investigators and Deputies, along with a Fire Investigator with the Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office.

The unidentified body is in the custody of the Grant County Coroner pending an autopsy. The identity of the deceased is being withheld until confirmation is made, and next of kin have been notified. No arrest has been made at this time.
