Indiana ranks sixth in nation in reading recovery

INDIANAPOLIS, IN- Indiana students continue making strong academic progress, with our state recently ranking sixth in the nation for reading recovery among fourth and eighth grade students.The report highlights Indiana as one of the top-performing states in helping students regain lost learning and continue improving literacy outcomes.Indiana’s third grade reading scores recently saw an unprecedented increase with an over 87 percent IREAD passage rate, the largest single year increase in over a decade. National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) rankings also show Indiana students performing above the national average in reading, ranking sixth nationally.

In 2023, State Representative Ethan Manning (R) supported legislation implementing Science of Reading standards, which focuses on evidence-based instruction to improve students’ reading competency and comprehension. The following year, the General Assembly advanced legislation to strengthen early literacy support through student screenings and earlier intervention for children at risk of falling behind.
