In February, the Miami Correctional Facility&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fox59.com\/news\/ice-detainee-dies-at-miami-correctional-facility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">came under fire<\/a>&nbsp;after 59-year-old Lorth Sim died while in the custody of ICE at the facility. He was from Cambodia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An ICE spokesperson said in a statement shared with FOX59\/CBS4 that all detainees have regular access to medication while adding that \u201cany claim that there are subprime conditions at the Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill, Indiana, is false.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cICE has maintained its high-quality care, including medical, mental and dental care for illegal aliens. This is the best healthcare many aliens have received in their entire lives,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the ICE spokesperson noted that an active investigation is underway amid allegations that detainees have experienced difficulty in communicating medical emergencies to staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDetainees have not been locked down and are free to approach staff to express any questions or concerns,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cDetainees have immediately notified staff during medical emergencies, who have in turn responded immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cICE is committed to transparency and accountability and regularly conducts inspections to ensure the well-being of individuals in its care. In fact, ICE has higher detention standards than most U.S. prisons that hold actual U.S. citizens,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cIt is a longstanding practice to provide comprehensive medical care from the moment an alien enters ICE custody. This includes medical, dental and mental health services as available, and access to medical appointments and 24-hour emergency care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three days after Bui\u2019s death, detectives with Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division also began investigating on April 4 the circumstances surrounding the death of inmate Shawn Booker. He was 50 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Miami County Coroner\u2019s Office and Miami Correctional Facility investigators are assisting. An autopsy will be performed on a later date to uncover the exact cause of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indiana Congressman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fox59.com\/news\/politics\/rep-andre-carson-calls-for-investigation-into-ice-detainee-deaths-and-the-end-of-ices-involvement-at-miami-correctional-facility\/\">Andr\u00e9 Carson appeared alongside dozens of protestors<\/a>&nbsp;at Miami Correctional Facility earlier this week to draw attention to the deaths of the two ICE detainees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said IDOC would collaborate with ICE to make as many as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fox59.com\/indianapolitics\/braun-designated-state-law-agencies-given-immigration-enforcement-powers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,000 beds available at the facility<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ICE has also turned its attention toward Carmel, where it was reported the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fox59.com\/news\/ice-eyes-office-space-in-carmel-as-efforts-to-ramp-up-immigration-crackdown-continue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federal agency is looking to lease&nbsp;<\/a>a four-story office space located at Penn on Parkway, which is an office park near Interstate 465 and U.S. Highway 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December, the Miami Correctional Facility came under fire after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fox59.com\/news\/indiana-state-police-investigating-2-inmate-deaths-at-miami-correctional-facility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two inmates died<\/a>, with just over a week passing between the deaths.
