She was born on January 2, 1928, to Walter and Elsie (Greiner) Zimmerman in Peoria, IL where she lived until the family moved to the Greiner farm near Metamora, IL. There she attended a one-room schoolhouse, being the only one in her grade for the entire eight years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Betty then attended and graduated from Metamora Township High School in 1945. She went on to James Millikin University in Decatur, IL, graduating with a degree in food and nutrition in 1949. She completed a one-year dietetic internship at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. In October of 1950, she accepted a position with the Veteran Administration Hospital in Marion, IN where she worked for 38 years, retiring in 1988 as Chief of Dietetic Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 28, 1953, she married William M. \u201cBill\u201d Whitham and the two celebrated nearly 45 years of marriage. He preceded her in death in 1998. They had two sons, Douglas A. (Gretchen) Whitham of La Fontaine and Bryan E. Whitham, who preceded her in death in 1985.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was a longtime member of St. James Lutheran Church, Marion where she was a member of the alter guild, and served on various boards and committees, also helping with Vacation Bible school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, going to their school concerts, sporting events, and doing various fun things with them, such as playing games. She enjoyed brunch and lunch dates with her retired work and church friends, collecting recipes, cooking, reading, music, and traveling. She said that she never felt alone remembering her confirmation Bible verse: \u201cLo, I am with you always, until the end of time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is survived by her son, Douglas, three grandchildren, Raleigh Whitham of Indianapolis, Grace (Jeff) Ballinger of Hunterstown, and Grant Whitham of La Fontaine. She was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Lydia Ballinger and Clara Ballinger, and many nieces and nephews, who all survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Bryan, and sister, Eva Drew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1206 N. Miller Ave., Marion, IN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate Elizabeth&#8217;s life will begin at 12:00 pm. &nbsp;Burial will take place at Grant Memorial Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memorial contributions may be directed to St. James Lutheran Church, 1206 N.
