It remains one of the most compassionate tools our state offers to protect the most vulnerable newborns and support families in crisis.<br><br>Recently, the General Assembly joined state and community leaders at the Statehouse to celebrate the impact of this law and the importance of protecting Hoosier life.<br><br>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.des05.com\/t\/48831662\/1676493225\/107605917\/0\/60330\/?x=ae467b05\">Safe Haven Law<\/a>\u00a0was first passed in 2000 and has continued to evolve over the years. In 2017 and 2018 they expanded safe surrender options to include baby boxes at designated hospitals and fire stations with 24-7 emergency medical service staffing.<br><br>Additionally, the state allowed EMS stations to install these lifesaving devices in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.des05.com\/t\/48831662\/1676493225\/106764911\/0\/60330\/?x=984a0bfa\">2021<\/a>. This year they also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.des05.com\/t\/48831662\/1676493225\/106764912\/0\/60330\/?x=04da81bb\">extended<\/a>\u00a0the age at which an infant can be safely surrendered from 30 to 60 days, giving families more time and flexibility during difficult circumstances.\u00a0<\/td><td colspan=\"2\"><\/td><\/tr><tr><td colspan=\"6\">Safe Haven Baby Boxes are climate-controlled incubators where an infant can be safely surrendered by opening a secure door and placing the baby inside. As soon as the door closes, emergency medical personnel are automatically alerted, and the infant is immediately transported to a hospital for examination and any needed treatment.\u00a0There are almost 150 Safe Haven Baby Boxes installed in Indiana, the most of any state. <br><br>Women who are pregnant and in need of help can call or text the Safe Haven Crisis Hotline at 866-99BABY1 or visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.des05.com\/t\/48831662\/1676493225\/83182893\/0\/60330\/?x=210e0fcc\">shbb.org<\/a>.
