The assignment: craft a suspenseful or scary story in
exactly 100 words, including all elements of a complete plot.

The challenge proved to be an engaging experience for a wide range of students.
Advanced writers embraced the opportunity to create compelling narratives under strict
constraints, while reluctant writers were drawn to the manageable word limit, helping them
build confidence and refine their skills.

Students had one week to complete their entries independently. While many initially
exceeded the word count, they rose to the additional challenge of condensing their stories
without sacrificing plot impact or emotional punch.

In recognition of their hard work, all participants received bookmarks. Select standout
entries—chosen by the Young Writers Association and with parental permission—were
published in the official contest collection. Although no WMS students placed in the top
three prize spots (which were awarded $50 Amazon gift cards), the number of published
entries from Wabash Middle School was notably impressive and a point of pride for the
school community.

The Young Writers Association hosts several 100-word story contests throughout the year,
open to students of all grade levels. Based on the success of this experience, teachers Mrs.
Indrutz and Mr. Backer will definitely have students participate in future challenges.

<ins class=""
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="0531879237494766"
     data-ad-slot="2870348528"></ins>

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="0531879237494766"
     data-ad-slot="2870348528"></ins>

WABASH, IN–Students at Wabash Middle School recently participated in the Young Writers Association’s national “Fright Night” contest, a unique writing challenge designed to stretch creativity and storytelling skills.
