Their deaths had gone unsolved for more than five years when Allen, then a pharmacy worker, was arrested in the case that has drawn outsized attention from true-crime enthusiasts.\r\n\r\nAllen had been there all along in Delphi, living and working in the community of about 3,000 people in northwest Indiana. He faces two counts of murder and two counts of murder while committing or attempting to commit kidnapping. If convicted, Allen could face up to 130 years in prison.\r\n\r\nNearly two years after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/arrests-indiana-146310ecf0be80717789465eff20ec27\">his October 2022 arrest<\/a>, opening statements are scheduled to begin before a special judge in the Carroll County Courthouse, just blocks from the pharmacy where Allen had worked. A panel of jurors has been brought in from nearly 100 miles (160 kilometers) away. They\u2019ll be sequestered throughout what\u2019s expected to be a monthlong trial, banned from watching the news and allowed limited use of their cellphones to call relatives while monitored by bailiffs.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abby-libby-delphi-indiana-richard-allen-trial-fbff62b009948f8bb12755898ca4f8ec\">Prosecutors said during this week\u2019s jury selection in Fort Wayne<\/a>\u00a0that they plan to call about 50 witnesses. Allen\u2019s defense attorneys expect to call about 120 people. The 12 jurors and four alternates will receive preliminary instructions Friday morning before hearing opening statements.\r\n<div class=\"td-a-rec td-a-rec-id-content_inlineleft  tdi_40 td_block_template_1\">\r\n<div id=\"doubleclick_widget-17\" class=\"td_block_template_1 widget widget_doubleclick_widget widget-shortcode area-td-in-article-ad \"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\nThe case has seen repeated delays, some surrounding a leak of evidence, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/missing-teens-killed-indiana-delphi-74f244b827f367784c7b871bef4b3e23\">withdrawal of Allen\u2019s public defenders<\/a>\u00a0and their later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/missing-indiana-teens-kidnapping-charges-82e7f6b0e21a49d25e95c5cf4a7a1948\">reinstatement by the Indiana Supreme Court<\/a>. It\u2019s also the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/arrests-indiana-indianapolis-homicide-563d16a69b36629b829a3d3127dc1478\">subject of a gag order<\/a>.\r\n\r\nThe teens, known as Abby and Libby, were found dead on Feb. 14, 2017, in a rugged, wooded area about a quarter-mile from the Monon High Bridge Trail. The girls went missing the day before while hiking that trail just outside their hometown. Within days, police released\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/25d1014de80042c6a0543c0623ac8dc6\">files found on Libby\u2019s cellphone<\/a>\u00a0that they believed captured the killer\u2019s image and voice \u2014 two grainy photos and audio of a man saying\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/isp\/files\/Delphi_Audio_Edited_2019x3.mp3\">\u201cdown the hill.\u201d<\/a>\r\n\r\nInvestigators also released one sketch of a suspect in July 2017 and another in April 2019. And they released a brief video showing a suspect walking on an abandoned railroad bridge, known as the Monon High Bridge. After more years passed without a suspect identified, investigators said they went back and reviewed \u201cprior tips.\u201d\r\n\r\nInvestigators found that Allen had been interviewed in 2017. He told an officer he had been walking on the trail the day Abby and Libby went missing and had seen three \u201cfemales\u201d at a bridge called the Freedom Bridge but did not speak to them, according to an affidavit.\r\n\r\nAllen told the officer that as he walked from that bridge to the Monon High Bridge he did not see anyone but was distracted, \u201cwatching a stock ticker on his phone as he walked.\u201d\r\n\r\nPolice interviewed Allen again on Oct. 13, 2022, when he said he had seen three \u201cjuvenile girls\u201d during his walk in 2017. Investigators searched Allen\u2019s home and seized a .40-caliber pistol. Prosecutors said testing determined that an unspent bullet found between Abby and Libby\u2019s bodies \u201chad been cycled through\u201d Allen\u2019s gun.\r\n\r\nAccording to the affidavit, Allen said he\u2019d never been to the scene and \u201chad no explanation as to why a round cycled through his firearm would be at that location.\u201d\r\n\r\nAllen County Superior Court Judge Fran Gull, now overseeing the Carroll County trial, has ruled that prosecutors can present evidence of dozens of incriminating statements they say Allen made during conversations with correctional officers, inmates, law enforcement and relatives. That evidence includes a recording of a telephone call between Allen and his wife in which, prosecutors say,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/indiana-teenage-girls-murders-69edf87c7e28861981432a1d7502c9e2\">he confesses to the killings<\/a>.\r\n\r\nAllen\u2019s defense attorneys have sought to argue that the girls were killed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/missing-teenagers-indiana-ritual-sacrifice-00df855b569e4bf108cbf5620c6a02ec\">in a ritual sacrifice<\/a>\u00a0by members of a pagan Norse religion and white nationalist group known as the Odinists.\r\n\r\nProsecutors have not disclosed how the teens were killed.
