She was born on May 26, 1940, in Wabash, Indiana, to Earl L. and Martha M. (Tomlinson) Whinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anita graduated from Roann High School in 1958 and continued her education at Indiana Wesleyan University. She married Jackie Wells on April 12, 1961, in Auburn, Indiana; they shared a long life together until his passing on January 8, 2022. Anita spent 41 years as a bus driver for the Wabash-Miami Area Program, from 1974-2015, where her dedication and work ethic eventually led her to serve as bus captain. She was also a longtime member of Wabash Friends Church. Known by everyone as a true workaholic, Anita poured her energy into everything she did. In addition to driving bus, she owned and operated Wells Country Store in Lincolnville for several years. She loved the outdoors &#8211; watching birds, tending to her flowers, and finding joy in the simple beauty around her. She was also an avid reader, and enjoyed shopping, especially for antiques. Anita had a giving heart, and throughout her life she donated to several different charities and missions. Above all, Anita was deeply proud of her children, and she shared that pride freely with everyone who loved her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is survived by three children: Sheri (Jerry) Proffitt, Angie (Nathan) Herring, and Doug (Nikki) Wells, all of Wabash; eight grandchildren: Tanner (Hallie) Proffitt of Wabash, Tyler Proffitt of Syracuse, Indiana, Clay Herring, Connor Herring, Brielle Wells, Alexa Wells, Jared Holmes, and Logan Holmes, all of Wabash; sister, Elizabeth (Paul) Little of Wabash, and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Patricia Fritz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funeral services will be 12:00 pm, Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Wabash Friends Church, 3563 S. State Road 13, Wabash, with David Phillips officiating. Friends may call 10:00 &#8211; 12:00 pm, Saturday at the church.
